Georges St. Pierre vs B.J. Penn

The Georges St. Pierre vs. B.J. Penn rivalry has already offered two fights with a huge amount of contrast.

When MMA fans talk about one of the closest split decisions of all time, the Georges St. Pierre vs. B.J. Penn first Welterweight Title fight comes to mind.

St. Pierre won the March 4, 2006 UFC 58 bout in Las Vegas by split decision. The judges scored the bout 29-28, 28-29, and 29-28. To this day MMA fans search to find the video of an extraordinary Welterweight fight between two rock stars in the UFC arena.

The second fight between St. Pierre and Penn produced different results but from the same winner. This time GSP utilized a TKO in the 4th round to earn a victory at UFC 94.

The second fight was not without controversy. B.J. Penn apparently talked trash and said he was going to "kill" St. Pierre in the ring. Penn would eventually say by kill he meant defeat. In other words, he just used "kill" as any other MMA fighter would. It just means that he wants to beat up the other guy. Put him into submission. I see no problems with using "kill". They are, after all, finely tuned UFC fighters. Penn knows the difference between kill and victory.

The second fight also faced controversy concerning the use of vaseline by Pierre. Was Georges St. Pierre greased up before this epic fight? The fight was supposed to be the biggest pay per view event ever. Yet, after the fight there was controversy surrounding the St. Pierre corner men rubbing vaseline on the back of Pierre. Talk about your bad PR. It did serve for some fine drama in post fight.

It also certainly leads to the possibility of having a third and final fight between the two. Penn reportedly admitted he got his tail kicked. But if vaseline was used by Pierre then wouldn't that have changed the dynamics of the fight to some extent? Penn says he would have lost respect for Pierre if that were true. Those sound like rematch and fighting words to me.

The "Vaseline" issue still weighs heavy on the minds of those who watched Pierre defeat Penn that night. It opens the door for a potential third and final match between the two. Penn filed a couple of complaints about the vaseline issue but those were never addressed. UFC Prez Dana White said the "vaseline" didn't have anything to do with the outcome of the fight. Just more ammunition for a Round 3 between Penn and Pierre.
